The mission and role of the Swedish Courts

Everyone should be able to have their case heard in an impartial court. Ensuring this right is the most important task of the Swedish Courts.

Legal security and legal certainty

All people have the right to legal security and legal certainty. These are central tenets of society and a foundation for democracy.

What is the justice system?

The Courts of Sweden and the other authorities collectively referred to as the justice system all have different functions and missions, ranging from preventing, combating, and investigating crimes, to hearing cases, enforcing sentences, and providing support to crime victims.

What are the different types of courts?

In the Swedish court system, most cases are decided by either the General Courts or the Administrative Courts. Which branch a case belongs to depends on its subject matter.

What do the courts do?

The primary task of the courts and tribunals is to issue decisions in cases and matters — in other words, to issue judgements. Cases are sometimes decided in trials, sometimes by assessing written material.

What is the role of the judge?

Judges issue decisions in cases and matters. No one can decide or influence how a judge will rule in a particular case — not other judges, court managers, the Riksdag, or the Government. The independence and autonomy of judges is important for the rule of law and democracy.
